In a nutshell, Montessori Method is a type of philosophy of child and human development that is designed by Maria Montessori as she discovered a great phenomenon of innate desire to learn within children. Her method is grounded in the basic belief, through observation of course, that given the appropriate framework and environment of meaningful equipment and projects plus abundant time, a child will embark on a journey of learning by choosing activities according to his or her current interests and needs.
The theory of Montessori Method comprises the understanding of Montessori philosophy and the process of human development and education. The main focus of this approach is the understanding of the child’s inner will of learning in relation to creating awareness of a child’s self-discipline, self-independence and self-obedience. Without the dependency on an extrinsic reward system, but with the creation of a curriculum by a trained educator, children mould themselves into well-mannered, articulate and joyful learners for life.
Montessori trainees and graduates who are trained in the Montessori Method are familiar with special terms such as ‘absorbent mind’, ‘sensitive period’, ‘normalisation’ and ‘psyche’ to understand the nature of a child in order to create a conducive and holistic learning environment with minimal interruption. It is extremely important that teachers or parents internalize the Montessori Method to help develop individuality amongst children that accentuates their innate intelligence.
